Introduction

Summary

This animation illustrates the negative powers of ten. Starting with one meter, we delve successively  into matter until we reach  objects in the range of a nanometer.
A correspondence between exponential notation and units of measurement (millimeter, micrometer, nanometer, angstrom) is demonstrated.

Goals

  • To illustrate the structure of living cells and orders of magnitude.
  • To introduce the problem of units and orders of magnitude.
  • To define the powers of ten (in this case, the negative ones)
  • To define the terms decimeter, millimeter, micron or micrometer, nanometer and angstrom.

Features

Click on the central frame or on the scale at top to progress through the zooming process.
