The Gauss theorem applied to a sphere of uniform density.  The animation shows what portion of the mass must be considered for purposes of doing the calculations. It is important to note the fact that the Gauss surface should be closed and permit a simple calculation if it judiciously exploits the symmetries of the system. The Gauss closed surface here is a sphere which has no material reality whatsoever.
