Lift HTML5

The main forces that act on an floating ball above a blower are represented. The same principle is in action for an airplane in flight. If the forces are balanced, the ball stays at rest above the fan and the aircraft cruises at constant velocity.

Click on 'Forces' to display the forces.

Click on "airflow" to reveal the airflow.

Click and drag the blower to tilt it.

Learning goals

  • To illustrate an example of mechanical equilibrium.
  • To show a non intuitive experiment dealing with pressure and fluid mechanics.
  • To explain how airplanes are able to fly.
